"Bread and Circuses"

Os Mutantes Documentary Trailer Formed in 1966 Os Mutantes is a psychedelic brazilian 'band' heavily influenced by the 'Tropicalia' movement with big name members such as Gilberto Gil and Rita Lee amonst others. There is so much history here I can't go into much but some of todays big name fans are of course Beck (you can hear them all over his stuff), Flaming Lips and David Byrne. They recently reformed at the reQuest of their groovy rock star fan base although did deny to tour with Nirvana for reasons I'm not aware of yet. Watch this trailer and see how dangerous it can be just to write a song in facist 1960's Brazil. I have so much respect for these people who find nooks and crannys to have 'get togethers' just to express their art at the risk of their lives. It reminds me of those Cambodian rock bands playing American style rock ,in the hidden ghettos of post Vietnam war era Cambodia, with the most fucked up instruments and the 'Khmer Rouge' looking to kill them for music.
