performance instruction

Many of Karlheinz Stockhausen's 1960s works were scored with non-specific instructions for the performers which allowed for individual "intuitive" expression and improvisation within a pre-prescribed environment. Here is where, for me at least, things start to get really interesting. This approach is at play in works like Prozession, Kurzwellen and Aus den Sieben Tagen (From the Seven Days), the latter being a series of 15 "text" compositions for smaller ensembles, wherein the composer-prescribed settings sometimes included actual physical conditions imposed upon the players themselves. This is perhaps best exemplified by the piece Goldstaub (Gold Dust), and it's worth quoting the score, if only to provide a window into the composer's mind and the new levels of composition and performance he was continually striving at in his work, often eschewing the standard duality between art and its environment, between the composer/performer and the universal: via live completely alone for four days without food in complete silence, without much movement sleep as little as necessary think as little as possible after four days, late at night without conversation beforehand play single sounds WITHOUT THINKING which you are playing close your eyes just listen below , an experience of performing GOLDSTAUB We were at Framnäs Folkhögskola [a boarding school, similar to an upper secondary school, I think, with a classical music profile] just outside Piteå [a small town] in northern Sweden. The school area had number of houses, formerly residential buildings that had been converted into practicing facilities for ensemble playing. continue reading

Miles Moments

Keith Jarrett tells a story about Miles Davis explained a very slow beat to a drummer. Interviews, about Miles Davis, with Keith Jarrett, Miles Davis, George Benson, Dizzy Gillespie, Herbie Hancock and Tony Williams. When he released "Bitches Brew" in 1970, Miles Davis opened up a new angle to jazz which stirred up emotions like no other record before. Some critics accused Davis of selling out, while the public bought it like crazy. It is one of the most examined albums of all time, even garnering a box set of the sessions. To date, "Bitches Brew" is one of the top selling jazz albums of all time. "Miles Electric: A Different Kind of Blue" examines the next step in the creative process...performing these songs live. The 1970 Isle of Wight featured an array of performers from The Who to Jethro Tull to Joni Mitchell. With improvisation playing a big role in the performance, the band (Jack DeJohnette, Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett, Gary Bartz and Dave Holland) had to be "on", yet ready to change on the fly. Directed by award-winning producer Murray Lerner, "Miles Electric" sits down with several of the performers who played with Miles, interspersed with his 1970 Isle of Wight performance, as well as artists such as Carlos Santana and Joni Mitchell, who describe the impact Miles Davis had towards music. magic moment 6:00. drums and bass in extreme improv moment.

tickling strings

...
Bennie Nawahi was one of the true masters of the Hawaiian steel guitar, ukulele and just about any instrument with strings on it. Not only does his work rank as some of the greatest Hawaiian music ever recorded, the imaginative, accomplished phrasing in his solos make him one of the unheralded giants 1920s string jazz. This overview covers Bennie's singing and instrumental work on native Hawaiian melodies, the blues, jazz, pop and rural music he heard on the mainland, and some of his own dazzling instrumental compositions.

Gretsch snare drum bags feature a plush interior that protect and maintain the appearance of your drums. The black and orange trim brings style and uniqueness to the bags. Make an impression every time by carrying your musical instruments in a Gretsch bag. Features: Plush Interior Steel Reinforced Bindings Heavy-Duty Triple Stiched Seams and Zippers History of That Great Gretsch Sound “That Great Gretsch Sound” is the anthem that began when Friedrich Gretsch, an immigrant from Mannheim, Germany, founded a small shop in Brooklyn, N.Y. in 1883. Before dying unexpectedly in 1895, Friedrich Gretsch created a dynasty that would last to this day and beyond. the people at Gretsch are smart. protective cases for drums have been extremely overdone and too bulky ever since the era of "gig bags" of the jazz musician taking the train etc. with their crap. finally they went back to the light and classic bag. reminiscent of a backpack. MADE IN USA 50.00 some how i eQuate classic music bags with what could be with surfboard bags. thought of more in the way a back pack works, a good board bag could be something you use for many different shapes when packing for heading west. i would happily pay for a GOOD bag that LASTS and all made in USA. think "Jansport" for boards. stronger than a sock yet not a White Elephant item.

Apocalypse Malibu -part 2 - Drainpipes "Damn you...

The ape village sets were built on the Fox Ranch in Malibu Creek State Park, Las Virgenes Road off Mulholland Highway, south from Route 101, northwest of Los Angeles.
The final scene, when Taylor (Charlton Heston) realises he’s been on Earth all along, was filmed at a secluded cove on the far eastern end of Westward Beach, between Zuma Beach and Point Dume, Malibu. Ignore the wide curving beach by the carpark and clamber over the rocks to the east until you get to the quiet, and often deserted, little beach surrounded by cliffs.

TCB

all via
The King was in search of an all-encompassing ethos, and sketched up a Captain Marvel-esque logo with the letters TCB and a lightning bolt, meaning "Taking Care of Business in a Flash." This basically meant getting things done pronto — especially if it meant getting Elvis another plate of meatloaf. In his 24/7 Dr. Nick-prescribed haze, Elvis also wrote up the legendary"TCB Oath" which is so insanely incoherent to the point of genius, one could be forgiven for thinking Sarah Palin wrote it. More self-respect, more respect for fellow man. Respect for fellow students and instructors. Respect for all styles and techniques. Body conditioning, mental conditioning, meditation for calming and stilling of the mind and body. Sharpen your skills, increase mental awareness, for all those that might choose a new outlook and personal philosophy. Freedom from constipation. TCB TECHNIQUE *** All techniques into one. Elvis Presley 8th Applying all techniques into one. HIs great, hugely underrated band from the 70s, featuring James Burton on guitar and Ronnie Tutt on drums was re-christened the TCB Band.
