Fargo

I always figured Echo Park held the record for the steepest street in L.A. with Fargo and Baxter being one of them. Especially post reading the Art Pepper book "Straight Life" and reading about the Claxton photo session of the picture above, just gave it that much more romance. Elysian Heights/ Echo Park has a really interesting history and it seems it's remained very much the same as far as demographics and characters. The wooded hillsides make the northern edge of the neighborhood feel like an extension of Elysian Park. Early automakers tested their newest models on Baxter and Fargo streets to prove they could climb some of the city’s steepest streets. The remote and rustic atmosphere made these hills popular with those seeking seclusion, including free thinking members of the Semi Tropic Spiritualists Association., whose midnight dances, seances and readings by “spirit mediums” attracted large crowds as well as ire of neighbors and city officials. Eldred Street in Highland Park is the steepest street in Los Angeles, steeper than Fargo or Baxter. 33% grade between Avenue 50 and Cross Avenue on the side of Mt. Washington. steepest streets globally (on the grid) 1) Canton Avenue, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 2) Baldwin Street, Dunedin, New Zealand 3) Eldred Street, Los Angeles, California 4) Baxter Street and Fargo Street, Los Angeles, California 5) Maria Avenue, Spring Valley, California 6) Dornbush Street, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
