While many trendy jazz heads will blow off this Quartet as west coast white wonder bread shlock, the fact is they were the shit. Even though Take Five hit the pop charts back then and Dave himself was a classical pianist as well and thee classic face of a nerd, they did some damn fine work. Sure there are some honkers but so what! This Greatest is in my opinion a must have for Brubeck 101. Take Five and Blue Rondo A La Turk were both actual hits and most of these tracks were singles in the 1st place. Ya got to look in the corners to find some of the hidden gems like UnsQuare Dance, Pick up Sticks and Raggy Waltz. Yes there's some white bread we could do without but these tracks (usually polyrythmic and NOT toe tappers) are played extremely well by masters Paul Desmond and Joe Morello. Joe in particular was a ground breaker with his solos that spoke to you and he MADE them toe tapping! And in the 7/4 time that's a big call. Just try and 'chicken head' to UnsQuare Dance! Brubeck experimented with time signatures throughout his career, recording "Pick Up Sticks" in 6/4, "Unsquare Dance" in 7/4, and "Blue Rondo à la Turk" in 9/8. For some rare great Dave search the Box upper left! -Me- 1st make sure ma and pa don't already have it. most do. GET BRUBECK HERE OH AND.....
