Somewhere in the evolution of the surf industry, the shapers and glassers got left in the dust of the higher-margin clothing and accessories companies dash to the bank. They didnt (couldnt?) board the lucrative locomotive that many surf companies are riding on today.

Nevertheless, theyre an integral part to the surf industry. Without surfboards, there wouldnt be a surf industry. Its almost like were the evil necessity, the anchor that drags them {surf companies}, says St. Pierre.

Surfboards are among the last of a dying breed of custom-made handcrafted goods. While most consumer products are spit out 2 4/7 in automated factories, high-end surfboards are each painstakingly shaped, painted, glassed, and sanded by hand. This is an art, not a business, says St. Pierre, referring to the process of making surfboards.

But even though theyre overlooked and under-recognized, and even though the cost of running their business has become extremely expensive and nearly unfruitful, glassers like St. Pierre have managed to keep it all in perspective: If the surfs good, I just leave and go surfing. Thats the only thing thats kept me going. And its rare in America that you get to build something bitchen and actually see it being used. Thats fun. Going down to the beach and seeing your friends riding something you built makes it worth it.

Artists need a memorable, resonant name. If you haven't a good one of your own, it's worth inventing or stealing one. How Peter Schwarze became Blinky Palermo is uncertain. Adopted not long after his birth in Leipzig in 1943, Schwarze was registered Peter Heisterkamp. Later, when he was a student under Joseph Beuys at the Dusseldorf Kunstakademie, facing the perennial question of who or what kind of artist to be, he took the name Blinky Palermo. Perhaps Beuys, himself one of the great self-mythologists of 20th-century art, gave him the moniker. Or perhaps it was a fellow student who rechristened him, recognising that Schwarze bore a resemblance to an infamous Italian-American mobster in the fight game.

"Another Green World"

A matte-black El Camino roars into a filling station, dust billowing as crashing guitar chords compete with the sound of squealing tires. Out steps Daryl Hannah. This dragster is powered by twin turbo, 24 valve, P7100 mechanical fuel pump, 5.9 liter Cummins Diesel engine. Same basic engine as a Dodge Ram truck. This is a pure stock short block with 35,000 street miles! We are just out there trying to see how fast and quick we can go. The engine has two stage ATS Diesel Performance turbos providing the boost. It can build over 100 pounds of boost. The pump and injectors we are using now are built by John Russin of Buddha Power. The transmission is a ATS Diesel Performance custom 47RE Dodge 4 speed overdrive, lock up 5 Star Viskus Converter Drive, with a electronic transmission brake. We have made many full throttle launches with this with no breakage. The lock up converter is bulletproof. The fuel that we are running is biodiesel, supplied from Blue Sun of Colorado. This fuel is made from virgin agricultural based products, not petroleum. We have found that this fuel has a higher cetane rating, and performs very well. In addition, it is a alternative fuel, a renewable resource. http://www.cumminsracing.com/images/wf_mid_run.jpg
