The story of Tom Curren’s first wave at J-Bay is intriguing. At the height of his career he had taken a stand and boycotted South Africa as a protest against apartheid. As the regime cracked Tom headed off to his date with destiny. Everyone already knew his style of surfing would suit the wave perfectly, but no one expected what he did on his first wave. On the long point which is notoriously difficult for mere mortals to ride well he took off and rode one of the finest waves in history.

What makes this wave outstanding is his read on the sections lining up, the linking of his turns and critical positioning with minimal effort. There is not one wasted turn and the ride still stands up to scrutiny 21 years later.

Sonny Miller tells the story. Enjoy
