1967 Rick - Barry Kanaiaupuni Pintail 7' 1"
This is one of the cleanest all original Rick - Barry Kanaiaupuni models we've ever come across. This board is the quintessential example of this late 60s period in surfing when Kanaiaupuni was "The Man" at big sunset in Hawaii. Pintails were the rage and short boards were just starting to become the main tool of choice.
This splendid Hawaiian pintail mini gun was an early production BK model as evidenced by the low serial number of 442, clearly visible by the stringer next to the logo. The foam on this board is still white with only the very slightest hint of beautiful and even patina. Both the W.A.V.E. set fin box and original fin are also in nearly perfect, mint condition. There are no dings or repairs with the sole exception of the professionally repaired tail. A finer example of an original 1967 Rick-B.K. would be nearly impossible to find.
Two 1967 Rick - Barry Kanaiaupuni pintails did sell in the March 2008 auction. One with a complete restoration went for $1,575. The other was unrestored but with repaired areas and in need of some repair, sold for $1,208.
The board at offer in this auction is near mint and except for a repaired tail, it is near flawless and completely original.
This ultra clean, all original Rick - Barry Kanaiaupuni pintail will be a featured board in the full color, hard-back book, Vintage Surfboards II available later this year.
Pre-auction estimate: $1,500-$2,000. No Reserve
