"alpax" Recorded at the Newport Jazz Festival, July 4, 1958 George Wein came up with the idea to form an International Jazz Band and he recruited Marshall Brown to organize and conduct the group. This came after Brown's Farmingdale High School band performed at the 1957 Newport Jazz Festival with great success. While several high profile arrangers were writing the book, hundreds of auditions were held throughout Europe and the final selection included 18 musicians from 17 different countries. With ages ranging from 20-34 it's hard to think of this as a "youth" band but this was still early in many of the player's careers and before they would become famous. Guest soloist Andy Marsala, who had just turned 16, came from Brown's high school band and would become a featured soloist with the Newport Youth Band the following year.

1 - Don't Wait for Henry 2 - Don't Blame Me 3 - Jazz Concerto for Alto Sax 4 - Too Marvelous for Words 5 - Swingin' the Blues 6 - Imagination 7 - Newport Suite, Op. 24 Most, if not all, of these performances were probably recorded on July 7, 1958. This group is listed as the "International Jazz Band" in the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival schedule [and as pictured on the sleeve of Philips [Hol] 840046BY]. Arrangements make it hard to detect Szabo's performance here except during a brief feature in "Imagination." According to the album's liner notes, this band debuted first on the Arthur Godfrey TV show and followed this performance with another TV show before touring. http://bigbandandjazzclub.blogspot.com/2011/11/international-youth-band-newport-1958.html
