Burton, Keltner, Dr. John, Jim Ford...'69 Country Soul
Ford has several song writing credits to his name which have been released by other artists, but his own career never really took off. After a few non-charting singles, he released the fantastic, criminally overlooked Harlan County album. Some really brilliant country-soul, featuring backing from drummer Jim Keltner, guitarist James Burton and pianist Dr John. Includes a cover of Delaney and Bonnie Bramlett’s “Long Road Ahead” and the Willie Dixon blues classic “Spoonful”. Within a few years of its release he had disappeared, and it never really got the coverage it deserved. Luckily it was recently re-issued on CD with loads of bonus tracks. Jim Ford died in 2007.

Jim Ford recorded his phenomenal album Harlan County in 1969 on White Whale records, alongside a handful of singles, and then fell more or less into obscurity for nearly four decades. His music combined the best elements of 60s southern rock, funk, soul, and country and his writing and arrangement abilities makes you question why he wasn't an immediate legend. The album was all but forgotten until Bear Family records re-released the album with extra tracks in 2007. A reunion gig was planned but Ford passed away before it happened, and Bear Family released another album of previously unreleased material a few months later.
