Band on The Run (Quadraphonic mix) Exellent!
Band On The Run the classic Wings album has recently been reissued, it was first released in December 1973. Band On The Run is one of those albums that has a very good story behind it.
In 1973 it had been 3 years since Paul McCartney broke up with The Beatles. After quitting The Beatles, Paul put together a new band called simply Wings. The first records released by Wings hadn't reached success neither with critics nor the public, even there of course were fans loyal to the former Beatle. The previous record Red Rose Speedway had been a bigger success and kind of showed the way where Paul and the Wings were heading. Especially the song My Love had been a big hit.
Then when it came to recording a new album Paul stumbled over a list of EMI studios over the world, and he got a crazy idea to go and make a record in some bizarre place. The choice landed on Lagos in Nigeria, Africa. The day before the take-off to Nigeria two band members quit, Paul furious about loosing both his guitarist and drummer decided to go anyway to make the album. The first impression of Nigeria was according to Paul that the fact that the country was very underdeveloped, and very different to what he was accustomed to back home in England. Then they arrived to the recording studio, and that was when they realized that the studio wasn't even built ready yet, and they had to construct sound-boots themselves.
Due to the fact of the drummer and guitarist quitting Paul had to play the drums himself, well no problem he just kept it simple and enjoyed it. Then one day as Paul and his girlfriend Linda is walking down a street in Lagos a car pulls up besides them and five men steps out, one of them pointing a knife at Paul. With Linda screaming "Don't harm him he's a musician" they get robbed on everything they wear, including the demo tapes. Luckily Paul was able to remember the songs he had written and no bigger harm was done.
The song Picasso's Last Words also has an interesting story behind it. On a party in the states Paul mer actor Dustin Hoffman, who asked Paul if he could write a song about anything, to what Paul answered "Try Me". Hoffman then showed an article about Picasso who recently had died. Well, McCartney did as he was told and Picasso's Last Words was born.
The album wasn't first a very big success but in February 1974 the single Jet was released and immediately jumped to the top of the charts taking the album on board the ride. The song is not about a dog, as often seen, but it started out with a pony named Jet from Scotland which then developed into a girl with marriage troubles.
The album reached the peak position on the charts on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. One of Paul's own favorites on the album is Let Me Roll It.
The cover photo was taken on 28 October 1973 against a garden wall in Osterley Park, Brentford. It depicts the now well-known shot of Paul, Linda, and Denny plus six other celebrities dressed as convicts caught in the spotlight of a prison searchlight. They are:
* Michael Parkinson (Chat-show host and journalist)
* Kenny Lynch (Actor, comedian and singer)
* James Coburn (Actor)
* Clement Freud (Columnist, gourmet, raconteur, Member of Parliament, Just a Minute panellist and grandson of Sigmund)
* Christopher Lee (Actor, then best known for roles, particularly as Dracula, in Hammer Horror films; now most recognizable as Saruman in the Lord Of The Rings film trilogy, Count Dooku in the Star Wars prequel trilogy and Willy Wonka's father in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory)
* John Conteh (Liverpool boxer who later became World Light-Heavyweight champion)

ok, we all pretty much hate Paul for many reasons ,YET his early post mop solo shit is great and i believe Wings 'B,O.R.' is his last great LP and possibly his best!
interesting though is the awesome 'Let me Roll it'. it reeks of John! don't it?
production sounds Spector and the damn song ROKS! strange.
The whole Lp is great.
loved it when i was a stupid kid. and now i'm a genius, and i still love it.
