Katie Herzig- Apple Tree
Katie Herzig is a singer and songwriter from Nashville, TN. While that would give her the cred within the country community, she displays much broader talents on her latest album Apple Tree.
The songs of the album definitely have a country flare to them, however, the overall sound tends towards pretty, ornate rockers. Herzig's music can be compared to many of our favorite indie artists. Liz Phair is one of the most obvious comparisons that can be drawn, but if you listen hard enough you can make out progessions and arrangements not disimilar to artists like The Shins.
There is no doubt Herzig has a beautiful voice. There are moments on Apple Tree when it is absolutely flawless. At her most intimate and emotional moments though, Herzig has the same warbling style of deliver as Kristin Hersh. And with an album of songs about unidealized love, there are plenty of those moments.
Unfortunately, the album is a bit uneven. There are some songs that will be skipped in most CD players. But thankfully those songs are overshadowed by unforgettably catchy indie pop tracks like "Hologram" or the country-stomper "Forevermore".
Overall we have a decent, but not fantastic album. But at the price who can complain?

my sense....
the 2 songs linked make it worth getting.
some really good ones and bad so editing will be needed.
she needs to realize her strength is the style of those songs rather than the boring candy pop commercial attempts.
