Stomu Yamash'ta's Red Buddha Theatre - Soundtrack From 'The Man From The East' (1973)
There are some off-putting things about this record: the mention of the theatre brings associations, in myself at least, that make me want to avoid it at all costs. Also, Mr. Yamash'ta is sometimes known as a Jazz-Rock or Fusion musician. These terms often indicate some fairly abusive listening experiences.
But of course, it does no good to judge in this way. Be assured, this is no collection of show-songs performed by voice coached actors and stiff part time music-teachers. Nor a wall of fuzz guitar, endless drum solos and soprano sax improvising on 'medieval' scales.
Stomu Yamash'ta is a Japanese musician and composer who studied at the Berklee school of music, led a group of 35 actors, dancers and musicians (the Red Buddha Theatre) aound europe for some years, composed the soundtrack to The Man Who Fell To Earth, and briefly retired to a Buddhist temple in Kyoto in 1980.
Listen and you will not be disappointed. A sometimes beautiful, sometimes surreal, but very together blend of Morris Pert's trio alongside traditional Japanese instrumentation makes for an album of strange, haunting music...
