The ambient "water lily" mix on this unique Ry Cooder-produced date can get dangerously murky at times. On the other hand, this is as close to traditional jazz as the minimalist trumpeter Jon Hassell could ever hope to get and the results are compelling. He even tries some standards such as "Nature Boy," "Poinciana" and "Caravan," all exotic entries to be sure but jazz standards none the less. Not surprisingly Hassell's deliberative sound calls to mind the zen master style of Chet Baker in the late peripatetic stage of his career. But the overall raga flavor of the enterprise also resembles the East-meets-West series of Pacific Jazz LPs that Ravi Shankar recorded when he was being introduced to American audiences.
