"Midget Submarines"

Swell Maps - "Midget Submarines" Not live but a good attempt with the existing footage of one of many influential bands from the early 70's. Swell Maps were not a 'punk' band in the respect that the term 'punk' is widely (mis)used, but they certainly espoused the DIY spirit of the age. They combined elements of garage rock, 'Krautrock', the avant-garde and what would later be termed 'ambient' music; they released four singles and two albums before splitting during a tour of Italy in April 1980. Posthumous releases were compiled from outtakes and home recordings. More Epic Soundtracks was my pick for the DIY drummer of choice. Played with "These Immortal Souls", "Pere Ubu", and was in demand both as talent and a cult icon. His solo records are heartbreaking 'Big Star'/ brian Wilson minimulist love songs mainly appreciated by only Epic fans.
